Professor Wesley Smith
With over 35 years of dedicated practice and teaching, Professor Wesley Smith has devoted his life to the martial arts. His journey began at the age of 20 when he first stepped onto the dojo floor, and that passion has only grown stronger with each passing year.
Professor Smith holds a 6th Dan Black Belt in Shudo Kan Karate and holds a 9th Degree Black Sash in Tai Wei Kung Fu under Dr. David Brownridge. His teaching philosophy emphasizes not just physical technique, but the mental and personal development that comes from true martial arts practice.
As the founder and head instructor of the Smith Institute of Martial Arts, he has trained thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to become accomplished martial artists and instructors themselves.

Our Guiding Principles
The Philosophy Behind Our Practice
Martial arts is more than physical training—it is a path of personal transformation. These principles guide every aspect of our teaching and practice.
Victory Without Conflict
Philosophy in Fighting
True martial skill is not about seeking conflict, but about having the capability to protect oneself and others when necessary. We teach that the greatest victory is achieved without fighting—through awareness, de-escalation, and wisdom. When action is required, we act decisively, with control, and without malice.
Nurturing Potential
Philosophy in Teaching
Every student carries unique potential. Our role as instructors is to nurture that potential through patient guidance, structured challenge, and unwavering support. We believe in building confidence alongside competence, ensuring our students grow not just as martial artists, but as individuals of integrity and compassion.
The Path of Endless Learning
The Way of Shudo Kan
Shudo Kan teaches us that the path of learning is endless. We embrace rigorous discipline and precise technique as tools for self-mastery. Through the practice of kata, sparring, and basic techniques, we forge bodies that are strong and minds that are focused. The dojo is our hall of learning, where every session brings new insights.
Skill Through Dedication
The Spirit of Kung Fu
Kung Fu reminds us that true skill is earned through dedicated effort over time. We honor the traditions passed down through generations while remaining open to the wisdom each student brings. The cultivation of Chi—internal energy—teaches us that power flows not from aggression, but from harmony with the natural forces within and around us.
"Sir, the ultimate good lies not in winning a thousand battles, but in avoiding a single conflict, Sir.
